A fall can change daily life in an instant, yet many of the risks inside a home are easy to spot and cheap to fix. Walk through your home this week with this short list.
The five checks
- Loose rugs. Tape them down with double-sided rug tape, or put them away.
- Night lighting. Plug-in night lights in the hallway and bathroom make the trip at 3 a.m. much safer.
- Grab bars. A bar beside the toilet and inside the shower gives you something solid to hold. Towel racks are not built to carry your weight.
- Clear walkways. Move cords, shoes and stacks of newspapers out of the paths you use every day.
- Shoes with grip. Slippers without backs or with smooth soles are a common cause of slips.

Some medicines can cause dizziness, especially when they are combined. At your next checkup, ask your doctor or pharmacist to review everything you take, including vitamins.
