On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California. The opening was broadcast live on national television, so families far from California could watch Main Street, U.S.A. and Sleeping Beauty Castle for the first time from their living rooms.

Opening day was hot and crowded, and not everything went to plan. Even so, the park became a symbol of 1950s optimism and the start of the modern theme park.

Do you remember your first visit? Many of our viewers went as children and later returned with their own grandchildren.
